***takes place before Shane returns to Sick Bay Vanir wasn't physically tired, just mentally. Every time he talked to Bella, he ended up the same way. If she didn't remind me of Logan so much, it wouldn't be so bad, he thought as he entered his cabin. A quick check on Ethera showed she was still asleep. He watched her even breathing a while, taking a measure of peace from the whatever innocence she had left. That doll was still clutched in her arm. He found the one real book he had with him then pulled a chair closer to where Ethera slept. He put his feet up on the edge of the bed and opened the book. He had no idea how long he'd been reading but it was long enough for the mental exhaustion to give way to the physical. The book lay closed in his lap, his place marked with a finger, and his eyes were closed. He was in a pleasant doze when a sharp gasp startled him awake. Ethera was sitting upright in her bed, shaking like a leaf. "Was falsch ist?" he asked, setting the book aside and sitting up straight. "What's the matter, Ethera?" "There's something wrong with Bella," Ethera told him, her aquamarine eyes wide with fright. "How do you know, liebling?" Vanir asked. "I just do. The same way I know when you're upset," Ethera told him, her voice shaking. He bit back saying that it was just a nightmare. The child's accuracy as his emotional states was very uncanny. He got up to sit next to her on the bed, hugging her to his side. He kissed the top of her head and said, "You're not going to go to back to sleep until I find out, are you?" Bright red curls, made unruly by sleep, shook as she said, "I can't." He let out a soft sigh then looked down at her, yellow eyes meeting aquamarine ones. "Fine. I will go check on her for you but do not leave this room unless I give you permission, verstehen?" "Thank you," Ethera said simply, kissing his cheek. He stepped out of the room and into the corridor. "Computer, what is the location of Isabella Valentine?" ==Isabella Valentine is in Sick Bay== Indigo eyebrows met practically met his hair. Of course the child was right. He could have teleported there but he had no idea what was going on. Mistakes could be disastrous. As it was, he made it there in short order, fading into a corner, hopefully unseen, while he watched. Listening, he realized that Bella had been stabbed, by that woman who was in the brig. Heilige Mary Mutter des Gottes... He stepped out of the corner where he'd been hiding and approached Bella. He hoped the doctor wouldn't shoo him away as he had no intention of staying any longer. He leaned close to Bella's ear to whisper, not knowing if she could hear him. "Isabella, Ethera told me something was wrong so I came to check on you. Get well, will you? I'll pray for you." With that, he left without another word, heading back to his cabin. He knew Bella was no angel but neither did he think anybody deserved to be so injured. That woman from the brig had to be crazy. Heaven help her if she comes near me. Ethera had fallen back asleep but he sat next to her on the bed anyway. By reflex, she curled up close to him, wrapping an arm around his waist. Taking comfort from her innocence yet again, he removed the rosary from his neck and began to do just what he promised Bella he would do. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
