Devil and the Angel by Vanir E. Wagner and Anita Tessasohn featuring Ethera Vanir set Ethera up at one of the spare work stations in the corner. He didn't know what had come over the child but she had suddenly become rather industrious overnight. He flicked a glance at her. Taller, too, I think. The only thing that was truly troubling him was what happened to Bella. Something was very wrong on the ship. Anita instinctively touched her small wound, compliments of the captain. Not following Maureen's instructions, she wandered about the ship. The doors weren?t hard to unlock, just a simple code she remembered was used and she found herself exploring. Again. The corridors were too quiet, as if people were observing her through security devices. She smirked, at least they get to see a show if anything happened. There was a sudden urge to see the engine room. She frowned at the compulsion but made her way there. The warp core. It would be so easy if she just shot the core right now, blasting everyone to kingdom come. A light laugh came from her, but she quickly silenced it. As was his usual, before he started any sort of work day, Vanir closed his eyes and said a prayer. It might have been an especially fervent one. Sure, Bella scared the daylights out of him but it was nothing he couldn't get over. He just had the feeling that they were all in need of powerful protection. "Don't tell me, you're the resident priest?" Anita looked at the man kneeling with his head down a little. She crossed her arms with a smile. Vanir was startled and jumped to his feet. Every bit of caution he had was telling him to get away. This woman hadn't been at the meeting. She had to be the one Bella had been talking about and the one who cut her. "I haven't had the calling for that," he said carefully. "Im an engineer, not a priest." "How touching, the core needs some 'divine intervention'." Anita replied. A thought came by that she might be able to play with this new person. The rest aside from Maureen didn?t know how to play well, "What's your name Father Mechanic?" "Everything needs divine intervention," Vanir said calmly. "I'm Vanir Wagner and I am going to assume that you are Anita, the woman who was in the brig." Anita laughed at Vanir's first statement as she looked at him amused, "apparently divine intervention missed me. Wonder why." She tilted her head slightly to the right, staring at the man. He didn't look armed, "and you're right. I'm Anita. Someone on the ship can't stop talking about me. Let me guess... Maureen?" When he made no reply, "Cervin? Shane...?" "Neither. It was Isabella. I know you two have met," he said dryly. He knew he was being looked over, assessed. He waited. "Oh, the poor girl must be scared shitless of me now. Such a waste really, she had potential," Anita thought about their encounter for a moment and then shrugged, "Crossed my path the wrong way I suppose. So, Vanir, what are you? I would say genetically engineered, but," Anita gave him another searching look, "you don't seem the type. Something's missing." "What am I? Ach, you'd know if you hadn't been in the brig. The technical term is homo sapiens superioris. The common term is mutant. This is all by the hand of God," he said simply. He shouldn't probably ask but he did. "And what might be missing?" Ethera had stopped working. She heard Mr. Wagner talking to someone and he seemed very tense. He didn't say I couldn't leave the console, she told herself so she crept closer. Anita heard soft footsteps, but she ignored it. They were coming from behind Vanir, she'd be prepared. Her attention shifted back to Vanir, "What's missing? Oh that's easy Mr. Vanir, you have no spark. Praying, carefully worded answers," she sighed, "and here I thought the rest of the crew were humorless. At least Maureen knows how to dish back," Anita frowned again, she didn't like their last encounter, but Maureen did know how to play. "Sorry to disappoint you but I'm no fool. I have better things to do than to end up another one of your victims and I do not believe in violence for its own sake," Vanir replied. He heard movement from behind him and nearly flinched when he caught sight of familiar bright red curls. "Go back to where you were. Now." Ethera froze. He never spoke to her like that. Instead of doing as he said, she inched closer, not taking her eyes off the strange woman. Anita smiled, "Oh, don?t worry, Im not about to cut you. Yet," She moved past him, making sure there was enough distance from both of them so that Vanir couldn't stop her. She saw a little girl, "a child... thought I always wanted a child. That opportunity passed," she said to no one in particular. "What's your name, sweetpea?" "Get. Away. From. Her." The voice left no room for misunderstanding. "Now." Ethera stared at the woman. She was making Mr. Wagner angry and she'd only felt that from him once. When he took her away from Master Xid. Anita turned to Vanir, "if you noticed, dear, she's too far away from me to do anything." She turned back to the kid, "what's your name, sweetheart?" Vanir stepped back, not away from Anita but toward Ethera. The girl looked up him, mutely asking if she should reply. He nodded, very briefly. "I'm Ethera." "Aw, Ethera, what a nice name," Anita smiled sweetly at her. "I take it Mr. Vanir here is your protector. Good, we don?t want the boogeyman to come out for you. Especially me," she perked her eyes up. "He sure is. He took me away from Master Xid and threatened to beat him up. Now he's teaching me to read and other stuff," Ethera replied, her adoration obvious in her voice. "Miss Anita...let me make something very clear. Nobody goes after this child without me going after them," Vanir said coldly. Anita chuckled, "I'm not after her, dear. And if you're going to make threats, well.. last I checked, I merely made a comment." She took a step closer to Vanir, "now I know what to do in order to get you panties in a twist." Anita blew him a kiss and slowly turned and walked away. "Oh Ethera, have a good night dear, I promise you, there aren't many these days." "I do not make threats. I make promises," Vanir told her. She stopped, not bothering to turn around, "And you'll do what? Make my life a living hell?" She laughed, turning back to him, "Make all the promises you want, Vanir. Ain?t gonna stop me. Besides, you go after me, sure you won't fall from grace?" She chuckled at the thought. "I am so very touched by your concern. Why don't you see tour own salvation and I'll see to mine," he told her. "Of course if you should need help, ask." "Salvation," Anita laughed as she clapped her hands, "oh that's good. It's a little late for me. Well, have a good night. Bye Ethera, so nice to meet such a pretty girl. Wouldn't want anything to happen to you, precious." She turned and exited, maybe Vanir would be fun to play with. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Dress up your holiday email, Hollywood style. Learn more.
