Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

The May issue of AccessWorld is now available on our website.

This issue features:

a.. Editor's Page: AccessWorld Is Listening!
a.. 2015 AFB Leadership Conference Highlights, by Joe Strechay
Highlights from the jam-packed 2015 AFB Leadership Conference. The conference
featured unique and informative panels and presentations from experts from
around the United States and abroad, and was attended by approximately 420
people from 38 states and 7 countries!

a.. A Review of the New ScanJig Pro Scanning Stand, by Janet Ingber
The ScanJig Pro is improved from its previous version. It is more stable and
easier to assemble. Unfortunately, the ScanJig Pro is difficult to use when
scanning a large document, and almost impossible to use with books.

a.. Audio Hijack 3 Audio Recording Utility from Rogue Amoeba Has a New,
Accessible Interface, by Janet Ingber
The new format for Audio Hijack 3 can be a bit confusing. Fortunately, it
contains many pre-configured templates, and VoiceOver provides a lot of
information including Audio Grid position and Help tags.

a.. Out and About: Our Favorite iOS Travel Apps, by Judy Dixon and Doug
Wakefield: A Book Review, by Deborah Kendrick
If you want to give better directions to the people who drive you from place to
place, if you want to take greater control of your own transportation
itinerary, or if you just want to learn more about the places in your
neighborhood and around the world, you will love this book.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Time To Weigh In!
Tell the Access Board that The Clock Is Ticking:
Get the 508 and 255 Rules Out ASAP!

The U.S. Access Board has finally published its formal proposal to refresh the
section 508/255 Standards and Guidelines intended to ensure the accessibility
of information and communication technology (ICT). With the publication of
these near-final Standards and Guidelines, the disability community has yet one
more chance to weigh in both with specific concerns about individual provisions
as well as our overall plea that these Standards and Guidelines must be
finalized at the earliest possible opportunity. Having official, finalized
Standards and Guidelines for the federal government and telecommunications
equipment and service providers to follow is absolutely critical to the
opportunity for people with disabilities to fully participate in the ongoing
technological revolution.

To offer your comment, send an e-mail to the Access Board.

All comments must be received by Thursday, May 28, and be sure to include
docket number ATBCB-2015-0002 in the subject line of the message. Tell the
Access Board that time is of the essence and that the 508/255 refresh is long
overdue and must be finalized by the end of this year. Be sure to identify
yourself in your email, which can be as long or as brief as you wish, but
remember that all such comments received are a matter of public record.

To learn more about the 508/255 refresh, and to review the entire Access Board
proposal, visit the About the ICT refresh website.
