4) EzriCare Eye Drops Linked to Dangerous Infections, Company Says Don't
Use Them
On February 1st 2023 the CDC posted an alert meant for health care
providers about its
investigation into drug and antibiotic-resistant infections linked to
artificial tears. The
ongoing investigation, which dates back to May 2022, includes 55 cases in 12
states. Many of

6) Ten Things Hospitals Can Do to Be More Inclusive and Accessible |
David Goldfield
During the past twelve months I have spent a lot of time visiting and
supporting my
wife in two different hospitals. I have become keenly aware of how these places
often lack
accessibility which would make the experience easier and more inclusive for
both patients as
well as their visitors. I have nothing but admiration and respect for the
medical
professionals who have done so much to assist and support my wife. The
following list is in
no way meant as a criticism of the doctors, nurses, surgeons, respiratory
therapists and
other specialists who have provided support to us. These people should be
honored and
respected as much as our military and its veterans. Indeed, some of the people
I have met in
the medical field are true warriors and war heroes and I am in awe of them and
what they do.
They see death on a regular basis. Many of them are called to save lives.
Sometimes they do
save those lives. Other times they are unable to do so. I cannot imagine the
effect on them
of this amazing and necessary work. That being said I've had some ideas of how
hospitals
could be so much more inclusive. These ideas would not require technology that
we don't
already have. Some would require a financial investment but they wouldn't
require new
technologies to be designed. While I don't have time right now to work on this
I'd like to
help engage in advocacy at a later and more convenient time to see if we can
turn some of
these ideas into reality:

7) YouTuber MrBeast Hailed For Giving 'Gift Of Sight' To 1,000
Visually-Impaired
People
YouTuber MrBeast AKA Jimmy Donaldson has made the world brighter for
1,000
visually-impaired people. He paid for cataract surgeries of these people who
were blind or
near-blind and could not afford the procedure themselves, as per CNN. Some of
the
participants were also given cash and other donations. Ophthalmologist and
surgeon Jeff
Levenson performed the first round of surgeries:

8) Accessibility Lessons Learned From Blind Users Attending A User
Research Study |
Equal Entry
Equal Entry held a user research study on virtual reality accessibility
for blind
users in New York City. This involved nine participants who commuted from their
homes to the
NYU Ability Project in Brooklyn. It turned out that several could not find
their way to the
building:

10) Blind Americans Come to Washington to Tell Their Stories to Congress
National Federation of the Blind Seeks to Advance Legislative Priorities.
Hundreds of
blind Americans will converged on the nation's capital to meet with their
representatives in
Congress to tell their stories and emphasize the need for legislators to
advance key
priorities that will help the blind. The annual event organized by the National
Federation
of the Blind, known as its Washington Seminar, officially began with a kick-off
meeting on
Monday, January 30 at 5 p.m. Eastern time. Throughout the rest of the week,
blind Americans
using white canes or guide dogs were seen throughout the Capitol complex. As
part of our key
priorities, we support the following legislative initiatives:

to hold
their title in their newsroom:

12) Researchers Develop A New Smartphone-Based Tool To Detect Visual
Impairment In

13) Colorado Woman Combats Norms By Becoming First In Her School To
Obtain Black Belt
In A Wheelchair | 9NEWS
Publisher: Prior to an injury that I sustained about 6 years ago now that
left me with
limited mobility I was a practitioner of traditional Korean Taekwondo for
almost 15 years. I
earned my 3rd Degree Black Belt under the late Grand Master Moo Hwan Kim and
during that
time taught thousands of students and competed in over a thousand full contact
traditional
and Olympic-stye Taekwondo sparring tournaments. And I just want to say, from
experience,
that martial arts families, of all styles and types, are comprised of some of
the kindest
people that you will ever meet. And more to the point, some of the most
understanding with
regard to different levels of ability. Everyone thinks that martial arts is
about fighting.
I certainly did. But it's really about living. So if you live with a
disability, please
don't think that martial arts aren't for you. They may be just what the doctor
ordered.
9NEWS: It is said that less than 10 percent of people who pursue karate will
ever obtain
their first degree black belt, and it takes years of practice to achieve that
accomplishment. Of that 10 percent, one woman at 5280 Karate Academy Foundation
in Lakewood,
Colorado is defying even more odds. Anita Liuzzi broke barriers by becoming the
first person
in a wheelchair to earn a black belt at 5280 Karate Academy in Lakewood,
Colorado:

15) Leading Self-Service Kiosk Technology Wins Accessibility Award
Vispero TM — the global leader for assistive technology products for the
blind and
low-vision community and provider of JAWS ®, the world's most widely used
screen reader,
announces that JAWS for Kiosk was awarded the inaugural accessibility award at
the
Self-Service Innovation Summit (SSIS) 2022:

16) New Kiosk Rules in the Works | TPGi
There are kiosks everywhere — self-checkout at grocery stores, check-in
at hotels and
doctor's offices, ordering kiosks at restaurants, banking, and retail stores.
Often, these
kiosks are inaccessible—they lack screen readers, tactile keypads, captions,
and other
critical accessibility tools. Often, an attendant is unavailable to assist, and
the only
option is the inaccessible self-service kiosk. As a result of the widespread
lack of
accessibility and a host of existing rules that touch on kiosk accessibility
but do not
cohesively address it, the US Access Board is revisiting the existing rules
around
self-service machines and their accessibility:

17) Under-Serving The Disabled Community Is Affecting Your Bottom Line |
Forbes
Poor digital accessibility will impact your bottom line. An inaccessible
website makes
it harder for visitors with disabilities to buy your products and use your
services. It bars
them from actively engaging with your brand, which can lead to lost sales
opportunities for
your business. In fact, 75% of people with a disability will take their
business elsewhere
because of poor accessibility and are even willing to buy from a more expensive
e-commerce
source that does offer an accessible experience:

19) My Experience Watching The 2017 Solar Eclipse With The BrainPort
The February 1979 solar eclipse, the last total eclipse in North America
during the
twentieth century, happened during my third grade year. Of course a good
teacher would use
it as a learning opportunity, explaining what an eclipse was etc. Mrs. Love was
definitely
one of those cool teachers, and also taught the class never to look directly at
the sun, and
how to use pinhole cameras with paper to be safe. My classmates and I went
outside during
the peak of the eclipse, not total but still 87%, and it was an exiting moment,
though I was
disappointed that I couldn't see it:

associated
nonprofit agencies across the country launched a new talent management
enterprise called

condition:

25) Art Revives Memories Of Visually Impaired
Australian Paralympian Katie Kelly should have been on top of the world.
She had just
won the first-ever gold medal for paratriathlon at the Rio games, and standing
on the podium
was a highlight of her life. But her vision was failing. Kelly's journey with
Usher
syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects both hearing and vision, was
beginning to
take a toll. So when she was asked to be part of Last Seen, a world-first
project where
artists bring visual memories of the sight-impaired to life, it was a moment
tinged with
sadness:

26) Addressing Narrative Language and Self-Regulation Goals in Yoga

through a
variety of imaginative and meditative stories and mantras which are inspired by
the
movements, characters and sounds:

27) Novacoast Launches Training Program Focused On Blind And Visually
Impaired Talent
Wichita-based cybersecurity company Novacoast is launching a new training
program that
targets what its leadership believes is are underserved segments of the labor
pool — and it
isn't limiting those opportunities to just its own operations. The company on
Tuesday
announced its Apex program, which will provide training for the blind and

28) College Success @ Perkins | Paths To Literacy
College Success @ Perkins was designed to address the gaps in college
readiness for
all students with visual impairments. The objectives are to increase
self-awareness, promote
self-advocacy, and build a strong foundation for success in a college program:
https://www.pathstoliteracy.org/resource/college-success-resources-perkins/
29) Talking Credit Cards Help Visually Impaired People Prevent Abuse
Credit cards are not easy for visually impaired people to use because
they can't
always see the terminal to know where to insert their card. But the main
challenge for blind
people is that they can't confirm whether the price the retailer keys in is
accurate. To
alleviate that problem, French tech firm Thales has developed a credit card
that talks. It
was the French who invented the chip card, with its four-digit-code security
system. Thales
is also developing a biometric credit card that can read a user's fingerprint:

30) 'Radio Talking Book' Keeps Visually Impaired Minnesotans Engaged
Back when we were a newspaper-reading country, there was the morning
edition paper and
the evening edition paper. The day's stories were always a big topic of
conversation. But if
you were blind or visually impaired, newspapers were not immediately accessible
— until
Radio Talking Book. Joseph Papke is the supervisor of the organization in St.
Paul, and he
joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about the birth of the essential
service:

33) 5 Products To Help Build Literacy Skills In Children With Multiple
Disabilities |
APH FamilyConnect
As teachers and parents, we plan a LOT when it comes to the education of
our precious
little ones. Especially with our kiddos who are blind or have low vision, as
well as
multiple disabilities, we plan to include not only the core curriculum areas
but also
Expanded Core Curriculum areas. We want them to learn an array of functional
skills to match
their educational skills. One especially important skill lies solidly in both
camps and
cannot be emphasized enough — literacy! Easily accepted as academic and part of
the core
curriculum, I cannot think of a more functional life skill than literacy.
Fostering this
crucial skill set in our kiddos with multiple disabilities can take some extra
effort and
thought. Here are some helpful items to support you as the parent and teacher
while you make
literacy learning both fun and possible for the youngster(s) in your life:

Did you know there are five RUBY models to help with your low vision

handheld video magnifiers provide the help that many people with low vision
need to read a
text and see details. All RUBY models have a crisp, sharp image, high-contrast
modes, and
built-in LEDs. The streamlined design means RUBY can go with you anywhere,
giving you easy
access to photos, letters, prescriptions, packaging labels, and menus, even in
a dark
restaurant. With its broad range of adjustable, undistorted magnification, a
RUBY video
magnifier outperforms a drawerful of traditional magnifiers. Join Ian Ramos
from Access
Ingenuity with Joe McDaniel from Vispero to discuss the features and benefits
of all the
RUBY models and the assistance each can give in specific situations. Note that
everybody is
welcome and can benefit from this presentation. If you are a teacher of the
visually

February 22nd 2023 | Procedural Safeguards and Parental Rights: New
Webinar Series
with Karen Mayer Cunningham | APH FamilyConnect
4PM PT, 5PM MT, 6PM CT, 7PM ET, 12AM GMT on 1/26
This fall, we were pleased to partner with Karen Mayer Cunningham to
present two
webinar series. Navigating and Negotiating Successful IEP and 504 Outcomes and
Ask the
Advocate provided information to parents, professionals, and school-based
members.
Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the IEP and 504 processes
as well as
the opportunity to ask specific questions about their child's IEPs. These two
series have
been highly attended, and we have received requests for more content from Karen
Mayer
Cunningham, the self-proclaimed “Special Education Boss”. The positive feedback
and need for
more content to support parents and professionals leads to the next series of
webinars. We
are excited to offer the next series to continue to support parents and
professionals.
Procedural Safeguards: Procedural Safeguards are handed out, and many don't
have a full
understanding of the document. Procedural Safeguards and Rights are in place
for parents and
individuals with a disability between the ages of 3 to 22. Unfortunately, most
parents are
only asked by school-based members if they “received” their copy of the
procedural rights,
and would they please sign in receipt of them. While that checks a box for the
school, it in
no way equips the families with a knowledge of their rights and protection, nor
indicates
the school's legal obligation. This series will identify your rights and the
difference
between procedural and substantive requirements. Join the APH ConnectCenter and
Karen Mayer
Cunningham as we dive into Procedural Safeguards and Parental Rights. Learn
more: We hope
you will join the 6-part webinar series to further your knowledge and
understanding of the

March 21st 2023 and March 22nd 2023 | Multiple Perspectives 2023 |
Americans With
Disabilities Act Multiple Perspectives On Access, Inclusion, & Disability
Conference | Ohio
State University
"It is time to move beyond the letter of the law to the spirit of the
law; to shift
our focus from redressing human and environmental problems through remedial
design to
preventing problems through holistic design." -Leslie Kanes Weisman. As a
modern land grant
university, an important part of Ohio State University's mission is outreach
and engagement,
serving the community through a variety of activities. During the tenth
anniversary year of
the Americans With Disabilities Act the Multiple Perspectives On Access,
Inclusion And
Disability conference was created to help fulfill this mission. In short, the
goal of the
conference is to encourage the kind of change suggested by Leslie Kanes Weisman
in the
opening quote. It is hoped that the annual conference will serve as a catalyst
for positive
change and a springboard for collaborations with our partners in education,
business,
public, and social service. Each year a series of workshops will provide a
forum for
individuals and organizations to expand their knowledge and perspectives, and
an opportunity
to increase community resources through the synergy of collaboration. The
workshops are
designed to bring a diverse audience together to discuss the full spectrum of
disability
issues and experiences. To ensure broad participation from the university
community,
business, state and local government, educators, advocacy organizations, social
service
agencies, and individuals with disabilities sponsors are sought each year to
subsidize
conference participants. Register:

easily identify
things around you. It also provides extra details, like how something works or

All the information you want with just a tap of your phone. No more
waiting around to
ask someone. You need just two things to get started: The free mobile app for

Accessible labels for the blind, deafblind, and anyone with vision loss.
Your biggest
problem isn't poor eyesight. It's that so much of the information in the world
is visual.
But you shouldn't have to wait around for someone else to get the information
you need. Or
carry around a bulky, outdated device. There is a better way to get accurate
and complete
