Was out looking out by the bayou after getting my mail and had a winter
wren hopping around out in the open. Stayed a few minutes to watch but it
was finding goodies in heavy fallen leaf cover. Quite a change from the
normal view of a winter wren.
And at least 2 weeks later than my latest record.
I think that the chickadee people have chicklets. One pair may be out of
the nest based on calls but I did not see them. But another parent set is
really hauling bark butter back to the same spot. The titmice are probably
close behind but are not hauling food as much but are feeding much more.
The barred owl chicks are getting bigger based on the mother owl really
getting upset when papa owl is slow on bringing food when she signals that
food is needed. Took about 5 minutes the other morning at about 2:30 about
25 feet from the window.
The cooper's hawks are further off and that has led to white-winged dove
swarms that no longer leave the feeder until I am almost there yelling and
waving my arms. And the red-tails are missing too.
Great hordes of house finches swarming the feeders but no sign of
youngsters yet.
A wood thrush has been singing in the morning and a single Baltimore oriole
male in really odd molt came by a couple of times. Still a couple of
singing butterbutts eating bark butter.
A pair of goldfinches arrived a couple of weeks ago and actually act
paired. A week ago they attracted a third goldfinch and a pine siskin. The
extra goldfinch left but the siskin is still about some.
The wintering gnatcatcher and female Wilson's warbler and the singing male
ruby-crowned kinglet are still maintaining their territories.
The squirrel people cleaned out the mulberries before they ripened for the
birds or me. They flee me less than the doves do. But I did get some
loquats for sorbet as a cat moved in close to the best tree.
