Environmental studies are being done to build a spaceport at Boca Chica.
A company called SpaceX wants to build a spaceport next to Highway 4, 3
miles north of the border and 5 miles S. of S. Padre Island.
There's a public meeting on May 15, 2012 at 5pm in the Brownsville ITEC
Center. They say it will provide 600 jobs.
While I think it would be nice to have a spaceport here, Boca Chica is
not the place I would choose. You can imagine the impact it would have
on birds and birdwatching in the area. With 12 launches a year the area
would likely be close during that time and include Boca Chica State
Park, Brazos Island State Park, Las Palomas Wildlife Management Area,
Boca Chica Unit.
