Upper level soundings this morning are showing winds continuing relatively strong with a distinct SW trend increasing from W to E. These winds are downslope-type winds off the central plateau of Mexico that promise to bring blowtorch temperatures to western Texas this afternoon. They may also wind-drift some circus-Gulf migrants with more westerly migratory routes (Western Tanager, etc.). At 14:00 bird echoes were beginning to assume the halo-like signature at Houston and Lake Charles. With velocities significantly above measured wind speeds it seems these are definitely migrating birds. The offshore returns from Brownsville and Corpus were distorted by some sort of electro-magnetic interference. Velocity images were not too far below posted wind speeds. Here in Austin the surface winds are quite a bit lower than at this time yesterday. I hear that late afternoon drop-ins added to species diversity if not large numbers of birds on most of the Texas and Louisiana coasts. I expect the same scenario this afternoon. John C.
