The upper air soundings this morning were somewhat surprising to me in that they were all solidly N. I had expected a return flow off the Gulf today in advance of a front predicted for Friday. Perhaps that will occur later in the day. Wind speeds were 28 at New Orleans and in the upper teens elsewhere. VAD wind profiles showed that winds had shifted back to the S at Brownsville and Corpus Christi but remained N at Houston eastward. Again, flocks of raptor-like birds were moving northward from south of Brownsville to north of Corpus Christi. There is no visible migration over the Gulf. Sometimes with light N winds trans-Gulf migrants appear on the northern Gulf coast without being detected by NEXRAD. They fly low over the water to take advantage of the slight reduction in headwind speed due to friction with the water's surface. John C.
