I'm afraid the only realistic chance your friend has of seeing any
Attwater's is to sign up for the first-Saturday-of-the-month van tour that
is offered by the APCNWR staff. They are (virtually) never seen on the
auto-tour loop that is open to the public, and even that has been shut down
for a number of weeks as a new auto-tour loop is under construction. You
might call the Refuge for current status.
Re the red-cockaded woodpeckers, best results have always been on the north
side of the highway that bisects Jones State Forest, behind the buildings
where the maintenance equipment is kept. There is a small parking area for
the public in front of the buildings. Early to mid-morning seems best for
activity. Watch for falling bits of bark as the birds feed in the upper
portions of the pines.
