Another one of those days when land bird migrants went by without stopping.
Started at the ferry that had lots of terns at the east end and pelicans at
the west end.
The bird of the day was the lingering oldsquaw with bad plumage that was
just sitting on the sand except when it stood to flap, decorate the sand or
turn around

It appears to be feeding well but has a bill problem with damage on one
side and overgrowth on the other side

But it is nice to have one sitting close

or standing close

It let people walk by within 10 yards without paying much attention but it
did watch
An eastern willet was out on the sand rather than flying around inland
screaming

Had lots of semipalmated sandpipers for the first time this spring
http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165329081
This western sandpiper kept me looking as it did not want to turn to see
the head
http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165329084
There were lots of least sandpipers in the gooey newly washed in mud than
is normal on the sand

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165329036
Dunlin are getting redder backs and blacker bellies
http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165329032
They really like feeding in the sargassum

Black-bellied plover are rapidly getting their summer plumage
http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165329031
East at the cut, a reddish egret was dancing and catching lots of fish

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165329011
The fish are tiny
http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165329015
And interlopers are not allowed
http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165329009
My friendly whimbrels was on station
http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165329017
And has been joined by some tamer black-bellied plovers
http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165329002
http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/165328998
And a great day out on the coast.
