I completely 100% agree with Cin-Ty ...I don't check every DOWO or HAWO for
spotting or lack of, but from the get go I was scratching my head about
this discussion.

First of all, the bird in question is a HAIRY WOODPECKER. Not a hybrid, not
a deformed Downy. The bill is heavy and long, almost as long as its head.
The bird is large. The bird is also quite elongated and has a relatively
long tail. The underparts are completely unmarked. The tail is for the
most part white.
There is not a single feature on this bird that matches Downy, save for two
tiny little spots on the white outertail, but that is within the range of
Hairy.
Tiny plumage aberrations can happen, but you can't mess with structure.
