The Swallow-tailed Kite trans-Gulf migration route (with stepping stones) is not without its hazards. John C. One died very near to the dead kite that Paul found. 15.4% mortality of breeding adults is not good. -----Original Message----- From: wdpatton <wdpatton@xxxxxxx> To: 'Jennifer Coulson' <jacoulson@xxxxxxx>; danny <danny@xxxxxxxxxx>; najames <najames@xxxxxxx>; rch1 <rch1@xxxxxxx>; bmyers990 <bmyers990@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; 'David Muth' <MuthD@xxxxxxx>; Paul Conover <zoiseaux@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Cc: 'Phillip Wallace' <pwallace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>; 'Donna Dittmann' <ddittma@xxxxxxxxx>; 'Curt Sorrells' <csorrells@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; jarvin <jarvin@xxxxxxxx>; 'Steven W. After Paul found the STKI on the beach in Cameron, I started worrying about a couple of the kites being tracked. It is not looking too good for Winyah, last dot was 2013.3.22, in the middle of the gulf. I returned to a location on the Vermilion River that we found 8 STKI last summer including 2 immature. I found 5 last Thursday, and returned Friday to find 4 of the same birds soaring over the same location. Two copulated and 1 carried moss to a tree. Hopefully they will nest successfully at the site. It is pretty easy to get to, and I hope to keep tabs as the summer goes along. I was able to get some good photos and have set up a web site. The underwing pattern is different enough to distinguish 5 different birds. I am sure they will change over time, but some may hold on to some distinguishing features. Jennifer tells me there is a good chance they will nest near the site, and should have eggs in a nest in about 2 weeks. I will be able to check again in a week. I have posted photos on a web site, and hope to be able to update it with good news. I think I will wait a while before posting anything on Labird.
