As the forwarded message indicates Rough-legged Hawk has again penetrated to the Gulf Coast (Fourchon is near Grand Isle, LA). The real reason for this message is to see if anyone has searched the Refugio County territory occupied by last years Rough-leg. It might be worth a look. John C. Photos at: http://www.pbase.com/pattonpix/roughlegged Unfortunately, this area is closed to the public and accessible only for official surveys and to contractors. I road down to Grand Isle with Erik Johnson yesterday to help with a BTNEP Piping Plover Survey. We met up with Don Norman and Delaina LeBlanc at Fourchon Beach and split into teams for the survey. Before heading out, Don Norman told of seeing a Rough-legged Hawk on the beach two weeks ago about 5 miles to the east. Delaina and I took one section of the beach and quickly found a hawk on the beach. It was a Rough-legged Hawk, but was up and gone before I got any photos. Despite a long search, we could not relocate it. We continued down the beach and kept pushing a Peregrine Falcon ahead of as we walked along. After a mile or so it flew from the beach and began harassing something in he grass. The Rough-legged Hawk took off, and I was able to get photos as it flew off to the NW over the grass and shrub flats. It dropped down about 1/2 a mile away behind a mangrove line.
