Encouraged by the reports of Dan Jones and Huck Hutchens, John and I dashed over to Sugar House Pond, in eastern Hidalgo County, between La Villa and Santa Rose. The Willet (quite rare in Hidalgo Co.) continues, as do many Wilson's Phalaropes, several family groups of whistling-ducks (at least one of both species), a number of graceful Black Terns, and the expected variety of other waterbirds and shorebirds. There seemed to be a general movement of stilts and whistling-ducks into the area containing processed sugar cane waste--not sure why, but the birds seemed to be preparing to roost as the sun got lower in the sky. Might have had one Long-billed Curlew, but couldn't stop and park in time. Buff-breasted Sandpipers around, seen in flight only. For other birds, see eBird.
