Greetings All: I will post highlights later but two birds discovered during the White River Lake CBC seemed to be worthy of immediate attention. Susan Bergeson, Jim Bertrand, and Rob Lee located a White-winged Scoter on the lake - photos of the bird suggest first winter male. On the down side: it was moving about a bit. On the up side: thanks to drought the lake isn't that big and the bird should be findable - along with an American White Pelican, up to 15 Common Goldeneyes, and almost 200 Common Mergansers. Anthony Hewetson located an immature Northern Shrike in the fields just northeast and southeast of the intersection of Highway 651 and Highway 261 - a little bit west of Kalgary. The bird was observed from 1:45 to 2:05, could not be located between 2:45 and 3:00, and was located a bit further south between 4:00 and 4:15. Be aware: there are near record numbers of Loggerhead Shrikes in the immediate vicinity. This bird still has a fair amount of brown barring on the ventral surface, a little bit of brown in the vicinity of the mask, and a brownish tint to the pale gray crown and back - you will know if you've found it.
