Hello all!
Made the long trip out to Katy from Lago Vista, but boy was it worth it. After
a 4 am wake up call, we made a few stops for food and drinks. We arrived at
Nelson Farm at around 7:45 and was greeted by Mr David Sarkozi. (Always great
seeing you and hearing about your big year!) a few minutes of small talk passed
when Dennis Shepler and Sue Orwig showed up. Nothing of interest happened for 4
hours (I believe the combines were messed up mechanically) so we headed up the
road to the playa in Waller Co. Not 20 min into birding that, we got a text
from David. The combines were up and running and they had a Yellow Rail!
Speeding back, we studied up on what to notice on the Yellow that the Sora
didn't have. Not 5 minutes into combine birding when another Yellow Rail got
spooked up! We had a total of at least 4 on the day. Walking back I got buzzed
by two Sora. Always a neat experience when we see massive numbers of such a
secretive bird. Also of note: I picked out an American Bittern in the field
that was seen by my dad. Year list is now at 311 (not bad for having missed
most of spring migration due to a deep run in the baseball playoffs!) All in
all, it was a great day with some great birders. Thanks to Dennis for finding
great views of a Yellow Rail for us!
