On Sunday the 23rd I found an American bittern here on the ranch at Pine Lake.
It was still there this evening. Definitely an early arrival.
In a kind of summer summary - it has been a really good year for most breeders.
Have seen four broods of young quail in recent weeks. The common gallinules
have had an absolute bumper crop. There are at least 50 young birds at the lake
and probably more. At least 4 young purple gallinule as well. Had at least two
pair of great egrets raise 5 young at the home lake. Fair numbers of young
night herons (both kinds), green and little blue herons. Most passerines did
well, too. One exception is that I have seen no young Eastern bluebirds. May be
partly attributable to too many starlings in these parts. Have about 60 wood
storks hanging out at the lake these days.
