Greetings All:
I spent 9.5 hours in Hockley County today, notching four new critters for
the 2016 list (Cloudless Sulphur - no picture - it blew by too fast;
Red-necked Phalarope - plenty of pictures; Northern Waterthrush - plenty of
pictures; Townsend's Warbler - no picture - not one of my shots of the bird
moving through foliage panned out)
The Red-necked Phalarope was first reported by Peter Keyel and was at Smyer
Playa this morning (the feedlot playa northwest of the town - transected by
Ellis Road as one drives west on Ellis Road from Highway 168). I relocated
the bird at the same site early this evening. These critters have been
known to hang out for a few days at good stopovers.
The Townsend's Warbler was in Pep - working the conifers along the northern
edge of the churchyard and by the Post Office. This bird is surprisingly
wary for a Townsend's Warbler - I usually have little difficulty getting a
good shot out of dozen or so photograph - but, again, these critters have
been known to hang out for a few days and some local birders might be
itching to add TOWA to their Hockley County list.
I will post all the highlights tomorrow. It was a long day and I am too
whupped right now:)
