The lake elevation is decreasing very slowly and the main roads thru the refuge
are still closed. That said, we still enjoyed a great morning of birding
tallying 81 species. We found 6 female Purple Finches. The entrance to Meadow
Pond Rd. continuing to be a good place to see them. We saw about 250 white
geese and a Greater White-fronted Goose. There was a Mature Bald Eagle sitting
in one of the big Cottonwoods near the Big Mineral picnic area. The feeders in
the work campers area continue to be good with lots of Pine Siskins, American
Goldfinches, Purple Finches and a good assortment of sparrows. At Dead Woman
Pond we found a Belted Kingfisher and 3 Red-headed Woodpeckers. Some species
especially plentiful were American Robins, Eastern Bluebirds, Harris Sparrows,
and Northern Pintails. Lots of ducks were seen from Headquarters.
