It was a very rainy day but the birds didn't seem to mind, at least the
Shorebirds and Terns. It rained about an inch last night and the rain
continued today, heavy at times. I found 18 species of shorebirds, some of
the better sightings being a Whimbrel in Steedman Marsh and at least 27
Dunlin in breeding plumage. There were lots of Black Terns flying around
and I counted 126 and there were probably a lot more. I also saw a couple
of Least Terns. Some Bobolinks are still present. There was a lot of
shorebirds in a wet field on Short Road, including 6 Hudsonian Godwits,
Wilson's Phalaropes, Long-billed Dowitchers, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs,
Pectoral and White-rumped Sandpipers. Warblers were scarce but I did see a
Nashville, Blackpoll, Common Yellowthroat and some Yellow Warblers. I
finished the day with 86 species.
