Started the day on Galveston's east beach with the pomarine jaeger arriving
at his seat and immediately started preening which seems to be his usual
task for the day.

And then lay down where it stayed for a couple of hours

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/163738269

It did stand up once and turn some

A lesser black-backed gull moves from east beach to bolivar flats. Today it
was at east beach

Least terns seem to be sitting on more eggs now that a month ago

Lots of variation in the plumage of young royal terns

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/163738281

And young sandwich terns too

A group of 7 western willets was resting next to the jaeger whereas the
terns kept a long distance

Yellow-crowned night herons were catching crabs but can also prey on young
terns or their eggs. Black-crowns are greater predators.

A pair of banded piping plovers acted paired and both apparently come from
the platte river population with the blue flag.

Had my first young of the year laughing gull following the ferry

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/163738297

And they are showing up everywhere

The ferry landing are good places to study cormorants with all the birds
neotropics at this time of year

Whimbrels were on Bolivar flats where they were catching crabs

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/163738308

It was hard to eat them as the laughing gulls poached on the prey but the
whimbrels poached on the western willets

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/163738309

Its hard for a whimbrels to drink with the long bill

Two Missouri river piping plovers were together on the flats

And banded young Wilson's plovers

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/163738406

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/163738409

And older Wilson's plovers

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/163738410

And older Wilson's plovers being followed by a youngster

Anahuac had young black-bellied whistling ducks

http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/163738412

Along with fulvous whistling ducks which were too fast for me as well as a
never ending stream of young common gallinules
