Greetings All:
Thanks to the competition with Rich Kostecke, I have been spending a lot
more time in my yard.
This morning's session with weeding, regraveling, and mowing the front yard
yielded nothing new.
This evening, though, taking the passage of the nightly Double-crested
Cormorant - presumably from Maxey Park to Leroy Elmore Park - as a cue, I
spent an hour enjoying the relatively cool air and hummingbird interactions
- also known as drinking bourbon and looking at the occasional bird:) This
evening, the two Black-chinned Hummingbirds (it is becoming apparent that I
have at least one immature female and one immature male using the feeders)
were not using the big lantana thicket; definitely not normal for my
hummingbirds. The reason become apparent when the male, briefly, dipped
towards the thicket and a monstrous (relatively) female Broad-tailed
Hummingbird emerged from the depths of the thicket (honestly, I heard
"Jaws' music in my head) and sent him packing. At long last, the final of
my five expected hummingbird species for the year!
Anything after this will have to be very good (Anna's; a photographable
Allen's) to a recorded-in-Lubbock-before-but-not-in-my-yard accidental
(Broad-billed, Whtie-eared, Blue-throated, or Magnificent Hummingbird) to
be a new hummingbird for the 2016 yard list.
Yard bird number seventy-nine for 2016 - Broad-tailed Hummingbird - and
about time.
