Greetings All:
This year's competition: Rich Kostecke's Austin yard vs. Anthony Hewetson's
Lubbock yard. The rules: anything that can be seen from the yards (no
restrictions to yard 'airspace'), heard birds subject to review and
agreement, no eye gouging, and no birding below the belt.
Rich ended July with 72 species and August brought him one newbie for the
year (Yellow-bellied Flycatcher), bringing him up to 73 species for 2016.
Anthony ended July with 75 species and, in comparison to Kostecke, had an
incredible surge in August, adding three species (Gray Catbird, Greater
Roadrunner, Mallard), bringing him up to 78 species for 2016.
Kostecke has expressed some optimism regarding September migrants. I, too,
am feeling optimistic as recent heavy rains have brought my yard back into
foliage and bloom ... and filled the playa lakes that produce the over the
yard movement of waterbirds I desperately need to stay in the lead as
songbird migrants start pouring through Austin.
