Hi Texbirders and Pelagic Fanatics,
I guess our Texas Pelagic trips this year must be a victim of our own
successes. In the past 3 years we have run a record 15 trips and seen record
high numbers of seabirds. So much so that everyone must be worn out from so
much success. Sign-ups this year are very slow and as a result the August
12th trip that was scheduled to be run from Port Aransas has been cancelled
due to a lack of sign-ups.
As of now the August 26th and the Sept 16th trips are both on a course to
suffer the same fate. I am appealing to everyone out there who is interested
in joining us on a Texas Pelagic this year to sign-up soon, very soon. I
have a couple more weeks to wait until I'll need to tell the Osprey out of
South Padre if we can run the August 26th trip or not. This trip is
scheduled to be a 16 hour trip. This amount of time will enable us to get as
far as the Colt 45 bank with a lot of time to run along the shelf edge in
deep water as we cruise north to this destination. The big advantage of 16
hour trips is that about 50% (8 hours) of our time on the boat is spent in
productive deep waters as opposed to the shorter 12 hour trips where only
about 1/3 of the time (4 hours) is spent in deep water. This doubles the
potential for the number of seabirds and marine mammals we could see. Our
two past 16 hour trips from South Padre went out to the Camel's Head, but
this time I thought we'd try somewhere new. Colt 45 reef is another salt
cored seamount that has great fishing and has been visited by an organized
Texas Pelagic trip only once to my knowledge.
If you're interested in going on a Texas Pelagic trip but can't stomach the
16 hour SPI trip on August 26th please email me and let me know if you'd be
willing to commit to a 12 hour trip on that date. I'd be willing to change
the length of the trip if that makes the difference in whether or not we
could run this trip. Of course we wouldn't make the Colt 45 reef in that
event.
