Hi, all!
Birded "Sparrow Road" this morning, which is basically Jara Chinas Road
running from US 83 in La Joya up to FM 490 west of McCook. Nothing out of
the ordinary, but did hear a Scaled Quail along the paved portion, plus some
Turkeys up by the county line, both of which were flagged by EBird but do
occur along this route on rare occasion. The lighting was great, and it
held off getting really windy until I was up at the northern portion (where
it's all barren fields, the abode of Horned Larks and Western Meadowlarks,
of which there were tons), but early on had great looks at Bewick's Wrens, a
Black-throated Sparrow, and both Cardinals and Pyrrhuloxias. Near La Joya
Lake two Ringed Kingfishers rattled in the distance, and there was probably
some residual wetland areas back in the brush as I heard a Common Gallinule
cackle! I actually saw very few sparrows numbers-wise, but had a nice
selection of species including Cassin's, Vesper, and White-crowned. The
usual raptors were about in good numbers, including a Redtail that I thought
was a Fuertes' at first (as I couldn't really discern a belly-band), but the
photos showed a pale but present one. Up at the north end was a bird-nado
that appeared to be mostly Brown-headed Cowbirds; tried to get a video but
it really didn't do it justice.
A few pictures (and a video of the Caracara) are on my Facebook page:
