Folks,
Let me add that based on our experience with Dolphin Docks, these long range
tuna trips off the shelf seem to provide a nice compromise to a pelagic birding
trip. Itâs a two-fer if you are a birder and fisherperson (the YF Tuna is
delicious ð. But the caveats from my perspective are:
- The trip is physically demanding and long. And Port A still has lots of
damage from Harvey and accommodations there are very tough to come by.
- The price of the trip at $400 plus tips and food (cost me about $500), is a
bit steep but as David pointed out, if you consider time in pelagic waters plus
the opportunity to bring home some fish, is good value
- This is primarily a fishing trip. You are on your own for the birding part
of the trip. The boat does not stop or slow down for birds in route to the
fishing grounds.
- You need to find your own birds which means being alert on deck the whole
time with camera at the ready. Looks at birds will generally be brief and
perhaps distant, though that is not too unlike other offshore trips.
- It would be a great plan to have other skilled pelagic birders on the trip
with you, not only as an extra pair of eyes to spot birds and to perhaps get
more camera shots but, to help with IDâs. This helped David and I find more
birds than we would have alone, IMHO.
Any pelagic trip is a great opportunity to add Texas (or county) year or life
birds or even full-blown âlifersâ to your list. You never know what might
fly by while in the âbig deep blue waterâ.
Good Sea Birding!

Subject: [texbirds] South Polar Skua Chasers
Texbirds,
Not to steal any thunder from David Sarkozi or Bob Friedrichs, but their
discovery of a SOUTH POLAR SKUA yesterday, in Calhoun County waters, from a
tuna fishing boat out of Port Aransas came as a huge surprise and other
Texas birders and listers may be interested in chasing it, assuming Dolphin
Docks takes the same route and visits the same fishing grounds on
subsequent overnight trips.
Dolphin Docks Inc. Charters has two upcoming 60-hour pelagic fishing trips
that have space available, one tomorrow and another on 20 October. The
50-hour trips at the end of the month on their smaller vessel are sold
out. They also have three 36-hour trips available in November on the 11th,
18th and 25th. See their website for details:
