Perhaps this explains their frequent presence in dusty dry rice fields during
harvest when no other rail species are present . Just them and the sparrows.

Well that makes sense to me, Just to clarify, the bird is not at my
feeders though, the photo was taken by a friend of ours in Port O'Connor.
I have not seen it but Petra Hockey has. I would love to have a Sora join the
cardinals at my feeders.

Clay's thought was mine, too, until, as a check on that supposition, I
read Kenn Kaufman's discussion of Sora (specifically, that species'
diet) in his "Lives of North American Birds" (Houghton Mifflin, ,
1966, p. 168), which notes three major foods of Sora--seeds, insects,
and snails--and, further, that at certain seasons their main food is
seeds (and mentioned what may be some of their major sources of seed
in marshes). Pondering this, the heavy, thick bill of Sora looks like
it should be a effective seed cruncher. If their usual feeding habitat
should be flooded or come dry, perhaps the Sora might wander to places such
as Brush's seed feeder.

I was telling Petra about my wonderful property Sora cat and I had
this morning. And she said that a friend of ours took a photo of
one in Port O'Connor eating bird seed under a feeder. I have not
seen the photo
yet,
but I have never heard of such a thing ...ever.
