Hi, all!
Braved the weather and headed out to Willacy County to bird the Santa Monica
Wetlands Route and the Primrose Path Route; got to see a fabulous lightning
display driving out there pre-dawn! The rain held off and it was calm to
start, but the wind picked up pretty good by the time I was done! It was
really quite birdy: wound up with 73 species altogether, including a
"Smudgy" Oriole (Altamira/Audubon's hybrid)! There were lots of bogs and
wetlands and therefore lots of water birds at both places; had my FOS Upland
Sandpiper along Primrose, and White-tailed Kite and Hawk at both places as
well. The Lark Sparrow was actually seen after I was done with the Primrose
route! Other highlights included Roseate Spoonbills at both places, a
singing Cassin's Sparrow, and two Great Horned Owls. Pictures can be seen
