and I did this in rice fields for a few years with a few different owners.
Incredible experience. However Black Rails remain somewhat elusive and
just do not flush even as they get "boxed" in, in ever decreasing uncut
rice. Cattle Egrets, etc. will eat them in a heart beat.. Also rice
harvesters wait into the day for heat/winds to dry out the rice from
humidity or dew and sometimes don't get started until well after noon.
They will not harvest damp rice. (Watch for Bitterns, Jacanas too :-)
