A Hooded Oriole was seen this morning in the far SE part of Quail Loop. Not a first sighting - but we hadn't seen one for a while and decided perhaps they hadn't nested here after all. I believe the nest is outside the park on private property. The first section of the resaca received water recently. The level is fairly low but good for the wading birds. Hunter's Lane resaca is also on the low side but the level should be rising a little this afternoon. Spoonbills, stilts and Tricolored Herons were seen from Hunter's Lane. The remainder of the resaca is dry at this time. Verdin and Bewicks Wrens are active throughout the park. The most reliable spot to find both remains the first section of Flycatcher Trail - either direction. -- Sherry Wilson Resident Park Host Resaca de la Palma State Park 1000 New Carmen Road Brownsville, TX 78521 956-350-2920 Bird Walks every Saturday - 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Butterfly Walks every Sunday - 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Night Hikes every Friday (must RSVP by 5:00 p.m. Thurs) - small fee Nature Tram Rides - Thursday thru Sunday http://www.facebook.com/resacadelapalma DIRECTIONS: The main entrance to Resaca de la Palma State Park is located on New Carmen Blvd. From Expressway 77/83, exit at Olmito, take FM 1732, follow for 2.5 miles; turn left at New Carmen Road; follow for 1.5 miles; shortly after the gravel hump in the road, turn left to enter the park. *Learn how you can help Texas State Parks:* http://bit.ly/sVdilb 49 species (+2 other taxa) Black-bellied Whistling-Duck 2 Mottled Duck 2 Plain Chachalaca 3 Least Grebe 1 Pied-billed Grebe 1 Neotropic Cormorant 5 Great Egret 2 Snowy Egret 5 Tricolored Heron 2 Green Heron 6 Yellow-crowned Night-Heron 5 White Ibis 3 Roseate Spoonbill 4 Turkey Vulture 8 White-tailed Kite 3 Killdeer 3 Black-necked Stilt 2 Laughing Gull 2 White-winged Dove 29 Mourning Dove 27 Common Ground-Dove 3 White-tipped Dove 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 8 Groove-billed Ani 23 Common Nighthawk 1 Buff-bellied Hummingbird 3 Golden-fronted Woodpecker 11 Ladder-backed Woodpecker 1 Brown-crested Flycatcher 3 Myiarchus sp. 6 Great Kiskadee 6 Couch's Kingbird 16 Tropical/Couch's Kingbird 3 White-eyed Vireo 3 Green Jay 10 Black-crested Titmouse 8 Verdin 2 Carolina Wren 5 Bewick's Wren 3 Northern Mockingbird 40 Common Yellowthroat 3 Olive Sparrow 8 Cassin's Sparrow 2 Northern Cardinal 9 Painted Bunting 1 Red-winged Blackbird 19 Great-tailed Grackle 54 Bronzed Cowbird 7 Brown-headed Cowbird 2 Hooded Oriole 1 SE end of Quail Loop Altamira Oriole 1
