Wednesday was a great day to be outdoors, so although the Visitor Center was closed we headed out in the morning with some visitors from Katy. This was primarily a photo outing so we didn't take a scope for viewing distant sandpipers. Dick (husband) and I continued birding the parking islands and Visitor Center in the afternoon and the list includes these sightings. Many warblers were around and they were pretty cooperative. We saw 10 species: Blackburnian (1, parking islands), Nashville (many), Yellow (many), Black-throated Green (around the Visitor Center), Black-and-white (many), Northern Waterthrush (south resaca), Hooded (south resaca), Wilson's (many), Yellow-throated (1, parking island), and Yellow-breasted Chat (2 bathing in the water feature, 2 south resaca). Vireos seen: White-eyed, Yellow-throated (parking islands), Blue-headed, Warbling (parking islands), Red-eyed (south resaca). Although many hummingbirds were around in the morning, by late afternoon there were very few - the lowest numbers we've seen recently. Note: The south end of the park will be closed to visitors this weekend and next (dove hunt). The Visitor Center is open and the tram will be running - just not the complete tram loop. -- Sherry Wilson Resident Park Host Resaca de la Palma State Park 1000 New Carmen Road Brownsville, TX 78521 956-350-2920 Bird Walks every Saturday - 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Butterfly Walks every Sunday - 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Night Hikes every Friday (must RSVP by 5:00 p.m. Thurs) - small fee Nature Tram Rides - Thursday thru Sunday http://www.facebook.com/resacadelapalma DIRECTIONS: The main entrance to Resaca de la Palma State Park is located on New Carmen Blvd. From Expressway 77/83, exit at Olmito, take FM 1732, follow for 2.5 miles; turn left at New Carmen Road; follow for 1.5 miles; shortly after the gravel hump in the road, turn left to enter the park. *Learn how you can help Texas State Parks:* http://bit.ly/sVdilb 65 species (+2 other taxa) Black-bellied Whistling-Duck 6 5 chicks Mottled Duck 8 Blue-winged Teal 15 Plain Chachalaca 5 Least Grebe 5 Pied-billed Grebe 3 Wood Stork 1 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 7 Snowy Egret 12 White-faced Ibis 2 Roseate Spoonbill 1 Turkey Vulture 2 White-tailed Kite 2 Common Gallinule 1 Killdeer 1 Black-necked Stilt 6 American Avocet 2 peep sp. 25 Short-billed/Long-billed Dowitcher 20 White-winged Dove 6 Mourning Dove 6 Inca Dove 6 Common Ground-Dove 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Groove-billed Ani 16 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 36 Rufous Hummingbird 1 Buff-bellied Hummingbird 1 Golden-fronted Woodpecker 3 Ladder-backed Woodpecker 1 Crested Caracara 1 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Least Flycatcher 2 Brown-crested Flycatcher 1 Great Kiskadee 4 Couch's Kingbird 4 Barn Swallow 4 Red-eyed Vireo 1 White-eyed Vireo 1 Yellow-throated Vireo 1 Blue-headed Vireo 2 Warbling Vireo 1 Green Jay 12 Black-crested Titmouse 4 Verdin 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 5 Northern Mockingbird 5 Long-billed Thrasher 1 Northern Waterthrush 1 Black-and-white Warbler 8 Nashville Warbler 7 Hooded Warbler 1 Blackburnian Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 15 Black-throated Green Warbler 2 Yellow-throated Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 6 Yellow-breasted Chat 4 Northern Cardinal 7 Indigo Bunting 1 Painted Bunting 1 Olive Sparrow 1 Dickcissel 1 Red-winged Blackbird 40 Altamira Oriole 2 Baltimore Oriole 8
