The weekly bird walk at Kleb Woods Nature Preserve found at least 3 Red-breasted Nuthatches today. One was heard by the Nature Center and 2 were seen at the area we call cool corner (near the feeder at the end of Draper path). This is an early date for that species at Kleb Woods. The previous early date was October 16th. Other signs of the season included: American Kestrel, Northern Flicker, Eastern Phoebe, House Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, bunches of Brown Thrashers, Orange-crowned Warbler, and Clay-colored Sparrow. There has also been a Rufous/Allen's type hummingbird hanging out in the butterfly garden for the last 5 days. Bird walks are held at Kleb Woods every Wednesday from 8:30-11:30 AM and the first Saturday of the month (e.g. this coming Saturday) from 8-10 AM. This Friday, Mary Anne Weber will be presenting History of Bird Conservation in the auditorium at Kleb Woods. She will be bringing live birds (a Red-tailed Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, and Barred Owl) with her. The program is from 9-11 AM. As with all programs at Kleb Woods, these are free and open to the public.
