A nice day to be out today but somewhat slow bird wise. Plenty of the usual ducks and shorebirds around the area. The persistent northerly winds have pushed the tide well below normal causing the shorebirds to spread out but they do make conditions more favorable for seeing Gannets. Highlights are as follows. Eared Grebe - 12 through the course of the morning. Northern Gannet - 6 Surfside Beach - Visible with binocs but best viewed with a scope. Rough Legged Hawk - Present at it's usual spot on the west end of Galveston Island. I observed the bird soaring over the field and occasionally landing out of site between 10:40am and 11:00am. Common Goldeneye - 4 for the day, 2 males and 2 females, 3 were seen from Sportsman's Road and the 4th was off of Stewart Road. Golden Crowned Kinglet - calling from the bushes near the water tower at the Rough Legged Hawk site. Hermit Thrush - a few at Lafitte's Black and White Warbler - 2, 1 male at Xeriscape and 1 male at Lafitte's Good Birding, John Tharp Houston, TX Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
