Saturday was one of the very rare winter days at Lake Meredith when the weather was pleasant and the lake was flat with hardly even a ripple. The water level is up from its lowest levels so that large vegetated areas are now flooded and filled with ducks. It was a treat to have such good scope looks at the Common Mergansers and the Common Goldeneyes in the deeper water. There were over 500 Redheads on the lake----a high count for me and likely birds on their way north. A singing Canyon Wren was a first for me at Lake Meredith. I have been seeing fewer and fewer to none at Palo Duro Canyon SP so it was nice to find one at the lake. This one was in a face off with a Rock Wren. There was a Northern Shrike in the mesquite trees on the water tower loop at Fritch Fortress. The gates to this loop have just been opened this winter, after being closed during the aftermath of SEP 11th. I found a Townsend's Solitaire on the drive into Harbor Bay and another at Point OH NO at the end of Coon Drive or Country Club Road. I did not see any American Tree Sparrows or loons, so they also may be on the move. I have not seen a Bonaparte's Gull at the lake this year; most years there are a few that winter at the lake.
