Amy and I birded Palo Pinto County yesterday. We stopped briefly (an hour?) in the morning at Possum Kingdom Lake to look for the Barrow's Goldeneye. No luck (which means it will probably seen on Tuesday or Wednesday of this coming week.) We did have a Northern Rough-winged Swallow and American Pipit though which were not here last weekend. We also found a Golden-crowned Kinglet below the dam off Red Bluff Road. On a small pond of Hwy 16 approaching Possum Kingdom lake (form the south) we had a pair of Hooded Mergansers. We also birded Palo Pinto Reservoir. On the way there, we found a great pond on FM 919 that had tons of ducks, including the day's only Canvasback. At Palo Pinto Reservoir highlights included Sandhill Cranes, Greater Yellowlegs, lots of distant ducks, Red-shouldered Hawk, and more. Nothing particularly rare. The best birds (and birding) of the day came from FM 2372 west of Strawn, TX. (This is the road where the new state park will go in. It leads to Lake Tucker and the Strawn City Park. Thanks to Greg Cook for the recommending this spot.) We had at least two Downy Woodpeckers, three Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Golden-crowned Kinglet, White-throated Sparrow, Hermit Thrush, House Wren, and much more. The best bird of the day was a male Eastern Towhee. He even perched in the same tree as a male Spotted Towhee giving us nice side by side comparisons. -- Jay Packer Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
