Painted Redstart in hackberry next to visitor center mixed with Yellow-rumped Warblers this cold morning. Two Long-tailed Ducks active near Fishing Pier as well. Black Scoters still in flock near Dagger Point. The Surf Scoters may have been mixed with them but I couldn't identify them because of lighting and distance issues. Other birds observed this morning: Cedar Waxwing - Visitor Center Bonaparte's Gull -Fishing Pier Horned Grebe -Fishing Pier Neotropic Cormorant - Fishing Pier Many species of waterfowl and both Whooping and Sandhill Cranes The Red-headed Woodpecker was calling near the entrance gate. (A note: please be respectful to residential areas near some of the birding areas, particularly where the Red-headed Woodpecker is being found. Ask before you walk around the houses; this is generally an off limits area for the public around the housing. You often can find the woodpecker just by watching the dead oaks trees on the right side of the entrance gate as you drive in the gate so you likely don't need to leave the area of the road. I don't mind taking people over there if I'm around and have time but we generally don't want the public wandering around the houses. Thank you!) A group of collared peccaries were near the visitor center as well. Also we could use help with a few good birders for the CBC on Wednesday, December 18 at 6:00 am starting at the visitor center if anyone can make it. We have a lot of inexperienced birders this year at Aransas so if anyone with some experience would like to help out we would love to have you! Our count is a fun count and we will have a good lunch at the visitor center when we are done, which will be in the early afternoon.
