Yesterday(04/28), I spent 2.5 hours or so exploring the Oso Bay Wetlands
Preserve. This awesome Preserve has a mixture of habitats, including some of
the best thorn scrub I have hiked through, and of course some very healthy
wetlands. They also offer a fantastic viewing platform that overlooks Oso Bay.
The Wildflower diversity was sensational - some patches contained 12 or more
different species.
During my visit, I observed 28 species of Birds, 7 species of Butterflies, 2
Texas Tortoises, and a new Snake species for me - the Eastern(Texas?)Patch
Nosed Snake.
Bird highlights included more singing male painted Buntings than I have ever
witnessed before - it seemed I never went for more than a minute without vocals
from these beautiful Birds. I also got eyes on at least 6 adult males.
From the viewing platform, Sara Jose(Education Coordinator for the Preserve)and
I had a Common Loon - on wing, no less!
Also observed: Roseate Spoonbill. Spotted Sandpiper(with spots!), Osprey,
Red-tailed Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, and Broad-winged Hawk.
Such a cool place - along with the Nature observing opportunities, the Preserve
offers a helpful and informed staff, and a way cool Visitors Center.
Located in Corpus Christi, the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve is a true jewel -
check it out!
