Texbirders, The Texas City Y oil spill is moving south along the coast of Texas. There are two important things you can do as a citizen and a birder. 1. Call 1800-424-8802 if you see oil anywhere on the Texas coast south of the initial area of Bolivar and East Beach in Galveston. 2. Call 888-384-2000 if you see any oiled wildlife, birds or otherwise. There have been comments about how to volunteer and the lack of opportunity to volunteer. Reporting oil on the beaches and oiled wildlife is the best way to get this information into the Incident Command System. So go birding on the coast with these two phone numbers and also look for oil and oiled wildlife, then report with specific location and photo document if possible. You know where the birds are and are the best ones to find any landfall of oil that could impact wildlife/birds. I started responding to spills with TCEQ in 1981, including the summer of 1990 on loan to NOAA from Texas in the Valdez Oil Spill, and ultimately managed state wide Spill Response and Natural Resource Damage Assessment Programs for TCEQ. Monday and Tuesday I counted oiled birds on East Beach as a HAS volunteer reporting to Incident Command Center. The response and cleanup on East Beach was being conducted in an effective manner with air cannons being used to keep birds off of the oiled shoreline where workers were removing the oily sand.
