A friend of mine came to me today asking about some dead birds her friend had in her yard. When she showed me a photograph, it was of three dead Cedar Waxwings lying in close proximity of each other on the ground. My initial reaction was they might have eaten berries which had been sprayed with some sort of insecticide. When I asked what berry-producing plants were nearby I was told Juniper and Nandina. We all did a little bit of research and were surprised to discover Nandina berries contain cyanide. I also found this interesting article regarding Nandina berries and, specifically, Cedar Waxwings. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3005831/ Does anyone else have additional information (anecdotal) regarding this and/or any other dangerous landscaping plants to avoid in our yards? -- April Grunspan San Antonio, TX http://agru.etsy.com Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
