Had a bus full of folks today for the birding tour. Had much of the usual stuff, along with highlights of Green Kingfisher, Vermilion Flycatcher, and Tropical Kingbird along the canal on the east side of the park. Hearing a Cactus Wren singing was fun as well. Some of that canal is visible from Westside park across from the McAllen Convention Center, but it should be noted that the park itself is still closed to the public (Quinta Mazatlan has one more scheduled trip in March). However, there is progress being made on the reopening - check the link for more information. http://valleygreenspace.wordpress.com/2013/02/13/the-city-of-mcallen-seems-set-to-approve-plans-to-reopen-the-botanical-garden/ McAllen Nature Center (LTC 065), Hidalgo, US-TX Feb 16, 2013 8:45 AM - 10:45 AM Protocol: Traveling 0.7 mile(s) 33 species Mottled Duck 2 Blue-winged Teal 4 Northern Shoveler 6 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 1 Snowy Egret 1 Turkey Vulture 1 Red-tailed Hawk 2 Solitary Sandpiper 1 Rock Pigeon 10 Mourning Dove 1 Common Ground-Dove 4 White-tipped Dove 2 Belted Kingfisher 1 Green Kingfisher 1 Golden-fronted Woodpecker 6 Ladder-backed Woodpecker 2 Eastern Phoebe 1 Vermilion Flycatcher 1 Great Kiskadee 2 Tropical Kingbird 1 White-eyed Vireo 3 Verdin 2 Cactus Wren 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 3 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 Northern Mockingbird 5 Long-billed Thrasher 3 Orange-crowned Warbler 4 Yellow-rumped Warbler 7 Great-tailed Grackle 10 Lesser Goldfinch 1 House Sparrow 15 -- John Brush Edinburg, Texas Interpretive Guide Quinta Mazatlan WBC Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
