Our team of very dedicated birders completed the 22nd running of the Matagorda County - Mad Island Marsh CBC yesterday (15 December). Weather was hot (high of 77) with light winds and habitats were filled with millions of mosquitoes. It was a really challenging day to be birding. 236 species were reported at the Count Down which was held at the Wadsworth Community Center. Rarities were: Tundra Swan Long-tailed Duck Brown Booby Pacific Loon Prairie Falcon (2 groups) Buff-breasted Sandpiper Black Tern (2 groups) Pomarine Jaeger Parasitic Jaeger Lesser Nighthawk Hairy Woodpecker Brown-crested Flycatcher Blue-winged Warbler Black-throated Blue Warbler Western Tanager (2 groups) Bullock's Oriole After 24 years of compiling this count and producing 342 species before this count, the results continue to amaze me. We would like to thank the many birders who helped out, the 26 landowners which provided access to their property, our sponsors and lastly the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center who facilitated hosting the event.
