Lubbock received 5.68 inches of rain during May, way, way, way above
the expected total for the month of 2.69 inches, bringing the year’s
total to 9.61 inches, well above the average to-date total of 6.50
inches. Despite the surplus rainfall, according to the US Drought
Monitor, most of our fifteen county region remains in a state of
drought, with over 50% in a state of abnormally dry (the lowest
drought rating) to moderate drought. The timing of the rains was a bit
unfortunate: too late to provide much in the way of habitat for
migrating shorebirds or arriving waders and far too late to bump up
plant and insect biomass in time for migrating songbirds. Working
against this and in local birder’s favor was the unusually protracted
nature of both winter irruptive events (Cedar Waxwings and Pine
Siskins persisted in unusual numbers throughout the month) and spring
migration (lots of relatively late records ranging from shorebirds to
songbirds).
Regional summaries of eBird data cannot be acquired in a timely
fashion. As a result, records submitted to eBird may not appear in
this report. Reports from the region that are submitted to the
texbirds or leasbirds listservs can be reviewed in a timely fashion
and should appear.
As always, the county follows the site in ( ) and birds are mentioned
by virtue of rarity, atypical abundance, or atypical scarcity. Water
Treatment Ponds have come to feature so prominently in these reports
that they will, henceforth, be referred to as WTP.
