Highlights of 174 species seen in 5 recent days of birding in the Lower Rio
Grande Valley and South Padre Island included:
Fulvous Whistling-Duck - 6 on Willow 2 at Santa Ana on March 3
Bufflehead - 34 on the river at Chapeno on March 2
Hooded Merganser - 4 on Pintail at Santa Ana on March 3
American Bittern - at La Feria Nature Center on March 1
Prairie Falcon - a bit of a surprise at Boca Chica on Feb 27 (when we
really wanted an Aplomado!)
Piping Plover - 2 on the flats by South Padre's Birding & Nature Center
on March 1 (there were none on Boca Chica beach on Feb 27)
Royal Tern - continuing bird at Anzalduas on Feb 28
Red-billed Pigeon - 3 on the island at Salineno on March 2 (with thanks
to John Yerger)
parrots - Red-crowned, Red-lored, White-fronted, Yellow-headed &
Lilac-crowned Parrots + a Green Parakeet at Brownsville's Oliveira Park on
Feb 27 (from about 5:50pm)
Flammulated Owl - continuing bird at South Padre's Convention Center on
March 1
kingfishers - all 3 species together on Santa Ana's Pintail 2 on March 3
Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet - at Santa Ana on March 3
Ash-throated Flycatcher - at Santa Ana on March 3
Couch's Kingbird - at Salineno on March 2
Sprague's Pipit - 2 at the Brownsville Sports Center on Feb 27
Northern Parula - at Estero on March 3
Ovenbird - at Sabal Palms on Feb 27
Brewer's Sparrow - 2 by the Dump Road at Salineno on March 2
Clay-colored Sparrow - by the Dump Road on March 2
Crimson-collared Grosbeak - continuing bird at Sabal Palms on Feb 27 &
orioles - 2 Audubon's, 4 Hooded & 2 Altamiras at the Salineno feeders on
March 2.
