Louisiana Waterthrush at Utopia - December 27, 2014 There is a Louisiana Waterthrush at Utopia Park which is off 1050 just west of 187 at the sw corner of town. Today it was at the north end of the main big pond where there is a former island with a clump of short willows (mostly leafless now) and some muddy water edge. The northerlies had it at the southmost point, with the least wind, and finally visible. I have heard the bird a few times in the last month, but had not seen it despite going after it a couple times. It has been on the far side of the (former) island and not visible. It is flighty and seems to disappear and shut up on approach. What are winter records on Edwards Plateau? I seem to recall something about 2 at Lost Maples by that rascal Derek Muschalek? Any dates on that, or any other hill country records in winter? The fresh grayish back contrasts with brown wings, tail, nape and head. The eyebrow is white and flares broadly behind eye, there are no spots in throat, bill is big, buffy flanks on otherwise immaculate white underparts, big diffuse-edged sparser streaks on underparts. Call is flat and slightly reminiscent of MacGillivray's chip, much sharper than Yellowthroat with a nearly two-syllabled aspect to it. Like a longer almost-broken note. A returning Rusty Blackbird, Pine Warbler, Zone-tailed Hawk, Merlin, and Ringed and Green Kingfisher are around Utopia. Happy Holidays all!
