A very nice find. It is interesting that I saw multiple small flocks of
longspurs on my way two and from the TransPecos along highway 90. I was
able to spend time with a nice flock of McCowan's along RR 505 near
Valentine. Seems to be a good year for widespread Longspur sightings.

of Brackettville on FM 674. I was on my daily run at the time, but got
definitive looks at their tail patterns at relatively close range (less
than 10 yards). When I went back with binoculars an hour or so later, I

Thursday the 31st, I had 11 Chestnut-collared Longspurs 1 mile north of
town. Again, I was running, but I again had very good looks at tail
patterns in flight at less than 10 yards. I saw these birds twice, once on
the run out, and again an hour later on the run back into town at about the
same place. I didn't have time to go back and look for them as it was
getting late.
There have been other reports this week of both species by other local
birders (Bryan Calk and Kathy Bader), with photos documenting the McCown's
longspurs.
