This morning Harry Forbes and I birded the Lions / Shelley Park in Refugio. We
found and photo'd the Greater Pewee on and near the bridge that is just down
the path from the pavilion.
We searched all the previously reported locations for the Golden-crowned
Warbler without seeing or hearing the bird. Other than missing the warbler,
sparrows and other seed-eating species were in short supply, except for
cardinals!
We enjoyed long looks and good photo ops of a pair of Green Kingfishers along
the creek that runs behind the pavilion. Also, there were 6 Great Kiskadees
along the fence/brush-line east of the park entrance, including a tail-less
bird.
This was only my second visit to Lions / Shelley Park. It is a very nice park
with good riparian habitat along the Mission River. The trails are well
maintained and the restroom clean. Definitely worth a stop, especially
considering the great birds there right now.
