Texbirds,
Of interest to county listers and Century Clubbers, there were at least 10
Laughing Gulls on the east end of Somerville Lake on Saturday, 10 March.
Sorry for the belated heads up. There was one off of Welch Park in Burleson
County before noon and then a total of 9 piled up on the cove beach at
Overlook Park in Washington County in the afternoon. I also noted about 5
Franklin's Gulls in total with 1-2 in Burleson and 3 in Washington. There
were also MANY Bonaparte's Gulls that stayed well away from shore and
mostly stayed put on the water off of Welch Park, quashing any chances of
picking out a Little Gull (or non-breeding plumaged Black-headed for that
matter). March is probably the best month on the Gulf coast for discovering
a vagrant Black-headed Gull among Ring-billeds or Bonaparte's.
I was also pleased to see my first Pectoral Sandpipers (5) of the year
picking insects off of wildflowers in the grass at Welch Park.
Does anyone bird the lake regularly?? I can only imagine what goodies pass
through there.
