Hey,
Kit Dapprich and I spent all morning birding at the productive Lake Park in
Lewisville. Definitely hoping for Winston Caillouet’s recent Ruff, which we
did not find, but had a great morning anyway.
Honestly with the 5-15 mph E winds switching to the north mid morning with
on and off rain (definitely more on after 9 or so with a few very heavy
downpours) this may have been the best birding area in DFW this morning.
Warblers would have been rained out and the wind would have made forest
birding difficult. The park also has a decent amount of exposed shore with
both rocky and muddy habitat. And the rain kept all but the most
persevering fisherman away.
We kept trying to leave but new shorebirds kept stopping in so eventually
we committed to spending the whole morning here. Started with great looks
at Hudsonian Godwits and then had groups of Sanderlings, three Dublin, and
2 Ruddy Turnstones. Everyone was in full breeding plumage.
Then we had great looks at a pair of Common Terns, and then a Whimbrel and
a Western Willet.
Could not find a least, bairds, or western Sandpiper but lots of
semipalmated and white-rumped sands.
Finished by trying to get some passerine migrants, which was a little
successful with a northern Waterthrush a traill’s flycatcher, and a heard
only ‘downward song’ thrush, either veery or Gray-cheeked but we just heard
part of the song once and never found the bird in the wet and windy
willows.
