Highlights of the 170 species seen during 4 days of birding the Lower Rio Grande Valley with friends from Indiana and Puerto Rico included: Fulvous Whistling-Duck - at Estero Llano Grande SP on 14th Bufflehead - 2 at Salineno on 16th Scaled Quail - at the site host's feeders at Falcon County Park on 16th Common Loon - flying N off Boca Chica beach on 15th Wood Stork - singletons over Santa Ana on 14th & Los Fresnos on 15th Zone-tailed Hawk - singletons at Salineno on 16th & Anzalduas on 17th Ferruginous Hawk - singletons flying S over Salineno on 16th & Santa Ana on 17th (it's looking like a particularly good winter for them in the Valley) Merlin - 'prairie' at Boca Chica on 15th Sandhill Crane - c180 over Los Fresnos on 15th Red Knot - 2 on Boca Chica beach on 15th Red-billed Pigeon - at Salineno on 16th parrots - the most memorable sight of the trip: a myriad of parrots of at least 3 species (together with a single Green Parakeet) roosting at Brownsville's Oliveira Park on 15th Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 2 at Salineno on 17th Northern Flicker - 2 at Salineno on 17th Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet - by the entrance resaca at Santa Ana on 14th Blue-headed Vireo - by the car park at Sabal Palms on 15th Golden-crowned Kinglet - by the car park at Sabal Palms on 15th Clay-colored Thrush - singleton at the feeders at Bentsen SP on 17th & 3+ at the Valley Nature Center in Weslaco on 17th Sprague's Pipit - at least 3 at Anzalduas on 17th Cedar Waxwing - at Laguna Atascosa on 15th Northern Parula - between the visitors' center & the levee at Santa Ana on 14th Pine Warbler - on the Chachalaca trail at Santa Ana on 17th Yellow-headed Blackbird - at the feeders at Falcon County Park on 14th Common Grackle - 'bronzed' singleton at the feeders at Falcon on 14th (perhaps the 'best' bird of the trip!) & Audubon's Oriole - 2 at Salineno on the 16th. We came across most of the regular local specialties (Gray & White-tailed Hawks, Ringed & Green Kingfishers, Olive Sparrow, Altamira Oriole etc) in goodish numbers at just about all the expected places but dipped on Muscovy Duck, Aplomado Falcon, Hook-billed Kite & the Valley Nature Center's Crimson-collared Grosbeak (but many thanks to Martin Hagne for posting the latter and adding some excitement to our last afternoon!).
