Kleb Woods has weekly Wednesday bird walks from 8:30-11:30 AM as well as First
Saturday of the month bird walks from 8-10 AM. In addition to these regularly
scheduled bird walks, we have some special fall programs you might be
interested in.
Wednesday, October 26 - Halloween Bird Walk (8:30-11:30 AM)
The Halloween bird walks at Kleb Woods are always a treat (or a trick,
depending on which jelly bean you pick)! As we see a bird species on this walk
the participants must identify it by its special Halloween name or else pick a
jelly bean from Kendra's bag. You have to experience this to get the full
flavor of the day. Recent sightings include Northern Trickers, Haunted House
Wrens, Brown Slashers, and Eastern Phobias.
Wednesday, October 26 - Black Vulture Nest: A Story in Photos by Frank Hudspeth
(1:30-3:30 PM)
After the Halloween Bird Walk, we will take a break for lunch. Then, join us
for a special photo presentation of a seldom-observed Black Vulture nest.
These photos will follow a 151-day journey from eggs to fledglings. The photos
were taken in Mississippi by Stan Childers, a nature lover and lifelong friend
of Frank Hudspeth.
Thursday, October 27 - Bear Creek Bird Walk (8:30-10:00 AM)
Once a month, we guide a bird walk at Bear Creek Pioneers Park. This month,
please meet at the intersection of Fox Ln and Ankele Ln, so we can first look
for the Pin-tailed Whydah that has been seen recently. We will then look for
the Greater Pewee which has returned for its 5th winter.
Friday, October 28 - Senior Birding Bus Trip (12:00-9:00 PM)
This trip is to see rice birds, especially rails. We are hoping to find rice
fields that are being cut in west Harris County and Waller County but may end
up in Colorado or Chambers County. Reservations required. Must be at least 50
years old. This trip is waitlisted.
Wednesday, November 16 - Conservation Pioneers: Theodore Roosevelt (3:00-4:00
PM)
Did you know that he kept daily checklists for the Whitehouse lawn while he was
president? While not specifically about birds, this class will be of interest
to some of you. Presented by Kleb Historian, Jim Wilson, the class will focus
on TR's passion for birds and wildlife and how as President he made wildlife
conservation a National priority and left a legacy that includes the National
Wildlife Refuges and the National Forests.
Friday, November 18 - Senior Birding Bus Trip (7:00 AM-7:00 PM)
This trip is to see Whooping Cranes either at Goose Island State Park or
Aransas NWR. Reservations required. Must be at least 50 years old. This trip is
waitlisted.

AM)
This is a repeat of the November 16th class.
Wednesday, December 7 - Flammulated Owl Studies with Earthwatch in Utah by Bob
Honig (1:30-3:30 PM)
Bob and his wife, Maggie participated in a Flammulated Owl research project
this past summer. They monitored nests and helped capture and band the birds as
well. These small mountain owls are not well known, and this study is sure to
expand the knowledge accumulated about the species to date. Join Bob as he
explains some of the questions the researchers are trying to answer. He will
share his thoughts about the possible answers and new questions that the study
is bringing to light.
Wednesday, December 14th - Birding the Katy Prairie in Winter by Fred Collins
(1:30-3:30 PM)
This is the second in a 4-part series on birding the Katy Prairie. In this
class, learn about the prairie's most interesting wintering birds and where to
find them.
All programs and classes are free. For more information on any of these
programs, email klebwoods@xxxxxxxx<mailto:klebwoods@xxxxxxxx> or call
